Advance Setup for Raspberry PI

1st Network setup

Raspbian is based on Debian distribution so that the network configure file is locate at ”/etc/network/interface”. Edit configure in this file to match with your requirement.

Get into your wifi network

The image came with wifi hotspot, you can set to your wireless environment by changing /etc/network/interface file.

In this example configuration, I am using vi as the editor, if you prefer nano which might be less complicate than vi. It is fine. At first you need to ssh to your Raspberry PI, if your Raspberry PI does not connect with monitor

1) Join to RPI_HotSpot 
2) login to Raspberry PI with username = pi and password = raspberry via ssh 

For OSX and Linux you can do the following command from terminal

$ssh 192.168.0.1 -l pi 

If you are using windows you can download putty. After install putty, launch putty and connect to address 192.168.0.1 and it will prompt you for username and password

login to Raspberry PI with username = pi and password = raspberry

$sudo vi /etc/network/interface

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet dhcp

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
    wpa-ssid mynetworkname
    wpa-psk mysecretpassphrase

This will allow your wifi to join your wifi network with getting IP address from DHCP server.

login to Raspberry PI with username = pi and password = raspberry

$sudo vi /etc/network/interface

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet dhcp

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet static 
    wpa-ssid mynetworkname
    wpa-psk mysecretpassphrase
    address 192.168.10.2
    netmask 255.255.255.0

This will allow your wifi to join your wifi network with static IP address 192.168.10.224

Roaming wifi
$sudo vi /etc/network/interface

iface wlan0 inet manual
    wpa-driver wext
    wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_roam.conf

iface default inet dhcp

    address 192.168.4.10
    netmask 255.255.255.0

iface work inet dhcp

With above changing two configure files, it will allow your wifi to connect to ssid-at-work and get ip address from DHCP server when you at office. And when you take this home, it will join to ssid-at-home and have a fix ip address as 192.168.4.10
